What you see are the remains of the very first plantation buildings of the first settlers in Suriname. From this point, the settlers/slave traders moved further into the country. Nowadays you can only see this foundation during the low tide when the water has receded enough. The area was cultivated between 1747 and 1760. The creek originally had no connection with the Atlantic Ocean, but already in the same century, slaves of the adjacent plantations had to dig a 9.5 kilometer passage by hand to open up the plantations. The Warappakreek was used by the English during the Battle of Suriname in 1804 to successfully take Suriname by surprising Fort Nieuw-Amsterdam via the Commewijne River along the back. The inhabitants of the plantations had to wage a continuous battle against the water. For example, the Bremen and La Rochechateau plantations, a military post and part of the Alsimo plantation were washed away.
